HARDWORKING U21s ON TOP AT KNOCKLONG

ROUND 3:

Monagea-Newcastle West .....................................5-14

Ahane .......................................................................1-4

Round 4:

Monagea-Newcastle West v St. Kieran's

Garryspillane GAA pitch at Knocklong was the cold but dry venue for last Friday's under lights game, and Johnny Murphy, who starred for Ballylanders when they defeated us in the County Senior Championship quarter final, refereed.

In front of what was without doubt the smallest attendance ever at a GAA game, our combined team was on top from beginning to end, scoring freely and regularly after a slow start and runaway winners at the end of a game where there were excellent displays by each and every one of the fifteen who started and the six who came off the bench.

The Ahane lads gave 100% from beginning to end.

Team: Andy Brouder, Eoin Murphy, Kevin Brosnan, Seán Murphy, Eoin Normoyle, Shane Brosnan, Brian O'Sullivan, Joey Healy 0-1, Gavin Riedy 0-1, Shane Stack 0-1, Stephen Brosnan, AJ O'Connor 0-4, Brian Hurley, Eoin Hurley 3-2, Martin Madden 0-1. Subs: Conor O'Sullivan, Darragh Quilligan, Jack McCarthy, Darragh McMahon, James Corbett 2-0, Ryan Clancy, Cian Sheehan 1-3.

While we had it easy v Ahane on Friday there will be no running away with it when we oppose neighbours St. Kieran's at Mick Neville Park on Friday at 8.15p.m. They will be well up for it, having lost to Seán Finns/Cappagh last weekend and with survival probably dependent on the result.

Limerick senior Darragh Treacy is their main man but Brendan McCarthy, Kevin Meade, Gavin Hayes, James Hough, Seán McSweeney, Dean Liston etc are quality players also and a win will be hard earned. Training continues.

Note: While our lads are leading the way in their division the team making everyone sit up and take notice is the Mountcollins/Athea combination who took a second big scalp on Friday when they defeated Fr. Casey's 1-12 to 1-10. The previous weekend they annihilated Galbally.

Athea/Mountcollins' top man is Mountcollins Stephen Cahill, a team-mate of St. Kieran's Darragh Tracy at CIT. However, while Fr. Casey's were pipped by their neighbours, it is a guarantee that they will pull themselves together and be still in contention when the chips are down. There's a lot of football to be played before that.

POST PRIMARY HARTY CUP ROUND 2

West Limerick Colleges ..............................................3-17

St. Flannan's Ennis .......................................................0-9

William Hurley and his first cousins the brothers Brian 1-2 and Seamus Hurley were on board on Wednesday last when the West combination took the scalp of the famous St. Flannan's, one of the great Harty teams, but now obviously  fallen on hard times. Next up for the local team trained by Tipperary man Dinny Cahill is the local derby, against the most successful school in recent times, Ard Scoil Rís. The battle between the teams' star players Seamus Flanagan (West) and Ronan Lynch should be worth going a long way to see. Lynch was Munster Minor Player of the Year in 2013, while Flanagan has excelled this year for the Limerick minors, and the Feohanagh/Castlemahon juniors.

MUNSTER/LIMERICK CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Glin 1-12, Inane Rovers 2-8.

Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-20, Na Piarsaigh 0-9.

Kilmallock 3-22, Sarsfields 3-20.

Bruff 2-13, Lixnaw 2-10.

It was a great weekend for West Limerick clubs in particular and Limerick club teams in general (except Na Piarsaigh). The field was the venue as Glin pipped the Tipperary champions. Feohanagh/Castlemahon were emphatic winners at Bruff, Kilmallock pulled it off in an extra time at home and Bruff held out in a tense finish at Austin Stack Park. Kilmallock oppose Cratloe in the final, Bruff take on Cappoquin, Glin are into the semi final, while Feohanagh are also through.
