Carey: Kingdom needs better refs

Limerick's Ciaran Carey

Lixnaw manager Ciaran Carey says hurling in Kerry will only progress to the next level if they improve the standard of their referees.

Speaking after his side's Kerry SHC final replay victory over Kilmoyley on Saturday, the Limerick legend told The Kerryman:

"I would have to say - and I wouldn't be one to be critical of referees - but I would maintain that if the standard of referees was upped about five notches, I believe the standard of hurling in Kerry would also go up to that level.

"I don't know but there's a lot of referees in from outside counties and it's a mentality thing with them too - 'ah it's only Kerry hurling'.

"Where you'd get a red card down in Limerick for a certain type of pull and up here in Kerry it seems to be the norm. It's the one thing that's hit me and I'm saying it for the good of Kerry hurling."
