Minor County Final
Fr. Caseys 2-13 Tory Gaels 1-12
Fr. Casey's are the County Minor Football Champions for 2014 after an outstanding performance in the final on Sunday. Tory Gaels, a combination of Croom and Crecora Manister, proved to be tough opposition and fought to the very end but the young men of F. Casey's showed the strength required to bring home the cup.
Fr. Casey's registered the first point of the game through Johnaton Lyons but Tory Gaels responded soon after with their first point before taking the lead through a pointed free. Jamie O'Connor, Cormac Roche and Paudie Smith all registered scores for the Abbeyfeale men, with Smith's point coming after a fine save from the Gaels goalkeeper. Tory Gaels reacted well to this trio of Fr. Casey's points with a goal to bring the sides level again. However, this only raised the intensity in the Fr. Casey's play and they pushed on to score two fantastic goals in a row. Johnaton Lyons struck first with a fine effort after a great move involving Paudie Smith, before Jamie O'Connor fired a cracker from thirty yards, leaving the keeper with no chance. Lyons and Smith then scored two points in succession before Tory Gaels stopped the onslaught with a point at the other end to leave the score 2-06 to 1-03 in favour of the Fealesiders at half time.
However, Tory Gaels showed a sign of intent soon after the restart with the first point of the second half. Johnaton Lyons then put the ball over the bar through a close range free before Pa O'Connor was unlucky to be denied a goal following a great save from the Gaels goalkeeper. The Gaels then hit a purple patch by registering four points with only a single point coming from Johnaton Lyons in reply during those few minutes of pressure on the Fr. Casey's goal. However, the Abbeyfeale footballers found their rhythm again with two points in a row coming from Conor Horan and Paudie Smith to steady the ship. Tory Gaels were to hit back again with a brace of points of their own to leave the game very much anyone's for the taking. Once again however, Fr. Casey's showed calmness to respond at the other end with two more points through Pa O'Connor and Daniel Lyons. Another point from the Gaels brought them within four once again but Michael Keane was clinical at the opposite end to leave the Gaels with too much to do entering the closing stages. They did manage a final point but it was to be Fr. Casey's day as the final whistle blew on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-12. There were joyous scenes all round as proud friends and family joined in with the celebrations. The management team of Liam Sweeney, Liam Galvin, Joe Brouder, Richard O'Mahony and Timmy O'Sullivan must be commended for getting the team to perform to this level. Certainly, the work put in during the year paid off on Sunday with a great team performance. It definitely was a combined effort on the part of the management with Sweeney and O'Mahony overseeing the efficient running of the team as all the parts came together throughout the year. Timmy O'Sullivan, usually quenching fires, was setting his team alight with great team talks while Liam Galvin had each player counselled before every game.   Also a special mention must go to Joe Brouder who worked tirelessly with the players and his delight at the final whistle was evident as he could be heard telling the Fr. Casey's supporters after the game that it was an A1 performance.
