Senior County Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 0-09 St. Patricks 1-09
Fr. Casey's were beaten at the semi-final stage of the County Senior Football Championship in Rathkeale on Friday evening. Limerick city club St. Patrick's clinched the game with just minutes to go by scoring a devastating goal after a well worked move. Up to that point in the game, it was close with just one or two points between the sides and the lead being taken by both sides at different times. St. Patrick's started the game well and scored the first two points before John Riordan got the first Fr. Casey's score on the night. St. Patrick's pushed on again however and scored another two before Fr. Casey's finally found some rhythm to their play. Billy Quirke scored three in a row but St. Patrick's responded again with their fifth and final point of the half. However, Billy Quirke popped up again before the interval with another point to leave the sides level. Again, St. Patrick's scored the first point when the ball was thrown in but the Fr. Casey's team began to hit a purple spell. Robert Browne scored a great point and this was followed up by a Timmy Gleeson score to give the Abbeyfeale men the lead for the first time. The momentum was back with St. Patrick's soon after as Fr. Casey's lost their way in front of the posts. Some wayward shooting allowed St. Patrick's to settle and they responded well by scoring a brace of points to retake the lead. John Riordan scored his second point to bring the sides level but St. Patrick's again followed this up with a point of their own to keep control of the game. As Fr. Casey's pushed for an equalizing score, St. Patrick's broke quickly and punished their defence to score a goal at a crucial time. Now trailing by four points, it left the Abbeyfeale men with an awful lot to do. Derry O'Connor did come back with a point from a tight angle but that was to be the last score of the game. St. Patrick's now go on to play in the final and we would like to wish them the best of luck.
