Ahane U8 and U10 Girls Football Blitz in Passage West

Ahane U8 and U10 Girls Football Blitz in Passage West; Co Cork on Saturday, 13 September 2014.

Ahane's young stars bubbled brightly in sun-drenched Passage West in Cork last Saturday where our U8 and U10 girls distinguished themselves in a football blitz hosted by the local club. This was a mammoth blitz with over seventy two clubs taking part.

The day started when our bus departed from the clubhouse with forty eight on board at 7.30Ahane's

am. Upon arrival in Passage West at 10am we registered and proceeded to the local national school to participate in the pre blitz parade. Led by a local pipe band, all teams, including our girls paraded and sung 'til their lungs burst! After the welcome address , the games proceeded at midday. With nineteen pitches marked out; our U8's played their matches on Pitch three and our U10's played on Pitch 12.

From the off, our girls gave it everything, helped on in no small part, by the very vocal support from parents and mentors in attendance. Over the course of the next few hours our U8's played Banteer , Passage West and Fermoy Cats, and our U10's played Carrigaline Cats, Clonakilty and Fermoy Cats. Execution of the basic skills, great teamwork and camaraderie amongst the girls was in evidence in spades, and some brilliant defending and counter attacking yielded some lovely scores. After the three matches the girls were presented with medals, and then everyone took time to kick back and enjoy the face painting, shopping, music and refreshments that were on offer on the Passage West campus.

By 4pm all were on the bus, headed to Supermacs in Mallow. Many thanks to the very efficient staff there, who had meals ready for everyone upon our arrival. Après Supermacs, all boarded the bus for our last leg of the journey, and the girls sang their hearts out until our arrival at the clubhouse at 7.30pm. All in all a great day out. Special thanks to the host club Passage West and Chairperson Francis for organising a superb event. No doubt this experience and the fun enjoyed on the day has created lasting memories for our girls.

To the parents who travelled on the day, many thanks. To our mentors, Fiona Kelly, Ursula Gavan, Allan Robertson and Jimmy Ferrick who took charge of our U8's, and to our mentors JC Farrell, Mary Flaherty and John Keane who managed our U10 squad, take a bow. Also special thanks to Tom our ever patient bus driver and to Breda Ahern for coordinating our squads for the blitz.

Last but not least the girls who shone and did us proud on the day were:

U8 panel Hazel Coulter, Emma Gillen, Roisin Lenihan, Abbey Roberston, Eda Hayes, Kate Murphy, Aoibhe Conway, Lucy Donnellan, Mae Farrell, Aoife Feerick, Ciara Flaherty, Roise Gavan, Hannah Roberston, Emma Robertson, Meabh Kelly and Rebecca O'Sullivan.

U10 panel Aine Conway, Rachel Donnellan, Kate Foley, Molly Hussey, Genevieve Hayes, Tara McCarthy, Ella Ryan, Aoife Whelan, Niamh Brennan, Anna Farrell, Rosin Flaherty, Jessica O'Shea, Claire Tanner, Meabh Foley,

We can now look forward to preparing and hosting our own blitz in Newgarden on Saturday, 18 October.
