St Mary's/Sean Finns GAA Club notes

Senior Football Championship
Last Saturday (9th August) we were well beaten by St Patricks in Bruff in Round-3 of the senior football championship. The final score of 3-13 to 0-07 tells its own story. Injuries picked up earlier in the season meant that we were forced to line out with Keith Harnett and Paul White and both players were sorely missed. Without them. We struggled to cope with the dominance of Gearoid Hegarty at mid-field and the high pressure game by St Patricks slowed the usual quick ball delivery from our backs to the forwards.
We started well and led by 3 points (Eoin O'Donnell, Eoghan O'Connor & Mark O'Sullivan) to a single St Pats point after 13 minutes. However, St Patricks had levelled by 17 minutes, before Gearoid Hegarty collected a ball and sent a rocket to the back of our net to put St Pats into the lead for the first time. Despite the setback we were still in the game but missed 3 scoring chances over the next 8 minutes. Then for the final 4 minutes of the half St Pats scored 2 more points and added a goal on the stroke of half time following a rather softly awarded penalty kick. The half time score was 2-06 to 0-03 and we had a mountain to climb.
An early Sean Finns point from a free was answered by 1-02 for St Pats inside the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half and the game, as a contest, was over. The next 10 minutes saw O'Connor replying for us with another point and St Pats recording two more before O'Sullivan converted another free for us. The final 10 minutes of the half saw St Pats record 3 more points before Barry O'Riordan added ours and the game's final score on 27 minutes. Final score: Sean Finns 0-07, St Patricks 3-13.
A convincing win for the city side for sure and on that form they will be in the final shake-up when the knockout stages commence. We now have a mountain to climb as we will probably need maximum points from our next two outingsto secure a qualifying spot. Drom/Broadford on the weekend of 24th August and Monaleen on weekend of 7th September will have other ideas.
Team & Scorers: Jonny Mooney, Shane Hourigan, Damien Quaid, Gary Enright, Darren Jones, Sean O Shea, Patrick Sheahan, Sean Sheahan, Trevor Nolan, Steven Power, Mark O'Sullivan(0-3, 2f), Patrick Wilmott, Eoghan O'Connor(0-2), Eoghan O'Donnell(0-1), Timmy Hogan. Subs: Mikey Morrissey (for T Hogan 35 mins), Dean Maune (for P Wilmott 40 mins), Barry O'Riordan (0-1) (for Trevor Nolan 40 mins), Conor Lyons (for Steven Power 50 mins), Martin Roche, Jimmy Dillane.

West Junior Hurling semi-finals fixed
Following a draw last Monday week, Tournafulla will play Monagea and St Marys will play Feohanagh in the west Junior Hurling championship semi-finals. Tour and Monagea will play in Newcastlewest on Tuesday 19th August at 6.45pm, while on Wednesday 20th August, we will play Feohanagh in Feenagh also at 6.45pm. Two great games in store, with a place in the West final and a county quarter final spot awaiting both winners.
Senior Football League
Sean Finns Senior Footballers concluded the group stages of the Senior Football league last Monday evening when they were beaten by Ballysteen on a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-11 in Ballysteen. The defeat is our first in the league and fortunately doesn't affect our table topping position having secured 6 wins from our 7 games. Interestingly, St Patricks have topped group-1 will be our opposition in the final. We now await the fixture of the county final of the league. However as we also qualified for the 2013 senior league final and are still awaiting this fixture, maybe we should not be holding our breaths.

West Minor Football Championships
Our minor footballers disappointingly received a walkover last week from Deel Rangers. The points go to Sean Finns who remain on maximum points but a game would have been far more beneficial. WE have one group game left agsint Feale Rangers (Mountcollins/Athea) which will be played this Friday night in Athea at 7.15pm.

Minor Hurling
St Marys played Kileedy last Friday night in the Bog Garden. Unfortunately we were beaten 2-21 to 2-16 after a good game with some excellent scores from both sides. Kileedys better finishing being the difference between the sides. This latest result means we are a bit off the pace with 4 points from four games. We received a walk-over from St Patricks and beat Bruree but have lost to both Knockainey and Kileedy. We will need better results against Askeaton and Feenagh/Kilmeedy if we are to retain any hope of making the top-2 places and secure a semi-final spot. We have plenty of games in the pipeline and the management and players, under the guidance of Jerry Molyneaux are all set for action.

Limerick Senior Hurlers
Disappointment was the order of the day in Croke Park last Sunday. In a match that had everything (brilliant displays, great scores, biblical rain, ecstasy and agony), Limerick's inability to score a goal was the difference between the sides with Kilkenny just edging the game thanks in the main to 2 goals at opportune times for them. Nonetheless, nobody could say that Limerick didn't give it everything and once the week is over, the focus will move on to next year again. We seem to be moving in the right direction, so hopefully, we will get back to Croke Park again next year and finally get Liam McCarthy to come Shannonside again. It's been way too long!!!
Limerick Minor Hurlers
The dedicated hurling followers will be back in Croke Park again this weekend when the minor hurlers play Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Most will remember last year's encounter between the same two teams at the same stage and the "Hawkeye" fiasco that arguably cost Limerick the game. Time to make amends me thinks!! There is a good Minor side there, but being good enough doesn't necessarily mean you will win. Limerick will have to seize the opportunity. Let's hope they do.
Club Fund-raiser - "Match the Time of First Goal and win €500"
The holder of the winning ticket has still not come forward to claim the prize. The goal was scored at 53 minutes and 44 seconds. The holder of this ticket can claim the jackpot, €500, by contacting the numbers at the back of the ticket within 30 days of the game. We await the call, but time is quickly running out. The prize has to be claimed within 30 days of the match which was played on 13th July. If it's not claimed in the next few days, the money will go back into clubs funds for the development of the Bog Garden.
Scrap Metal
There's an old saying that says "It's an ill wind that blows no good". Maybe the storms of the spring have increased the possibility of scrap metal in the area. We would like take this opportunity to remind our friends and supporters that the club has an on-going scrap metal collection operation in place. Contact James O'Connor or any committee member if you have anything to donate. Collection can be arranged if necessary.
