West Senior Football Championship Final: St. Kieran's 0.2 Newcastlewest 0.8
The senior footballers made the journey to Abbeyfeale on Saturday evening hoping to end a 20 year wait since the club last lifted the West Senior football championship. We have had mixed fortunes during the intervening period contesting a number of finals over the years but Abbeyfeale has proved to be an unhappy hunting ground. Hopes were high prior to the game that we could end the famine and continue our good run of form in serious competitive action this campaign which has saw the side attain victories over Adare and Ballysteen in the county championship and county champions Drom/Broadford and once again Adare in the West Championship. The game began slowly on our part and this was to be the tale throughout the encounter as we failed to get a stranglehold on a highly motivated and tuned in Newcastlewest side on the evening. We created a number of scoring opportunities early, alas our scoring boots were off and we failed to hit the target which was to prove a telling factor in the outcome of the game. At times we found possession very hard to come by as Newcastlewest held the upper hand in this department. To our defence's credit they held firm throughout the encounter proving secure reinforcement in front of Patrick Histon in goals forcing the Newcastlewest attack to resort to a number of pressurised kicks which went haplessly wide in the opening period. While our defensive system was working to an extent up front possession and scores were hard to come by as it was extremely difficult to stop Newcastlewest from obtaining possession from their kick out's due to their precision from short kick outs using their extra man to great extent. We trailed Newcastlewest at the break having only registered a solitary point in thirty minutes of football. We began the second half recognising that our level of performance would have to be upped if we were to come away with silverware as Newcastlewest a side littered with pace in abundance were going to up the tempo of the game. Sean McSweeney got us on the board again doubling our tally with an early free which was to prove our last score of the game. The game escalated due to a number of unsavoury moment's midway through the second half as tensions ran high between the two neighbouring sides. In truth these actions have very little place on the field of play and the failure of the referee and his officials to adequately deal with the situation could have caused a number of players to obtain serious injury. Following these altercations the game resumed and it was clear that Newcastlewest were now upping the intensity of their play which we simply could not match as they began to pull away from us with four late scores to increase their lead and all but secure the west championship for 2014 as our wait for silverware grows ever-longer at this level. The manner of the defeat was quite disappointing and we will have to up our performance in the coming weeks if we are to make any shape in the county championship where Galbally are our next opponents and Newcastlewest and Fr. Casey's lay in the long grass after that. Training continues this week and more players need to make a better effort if we are to progress.
