Glin club notes
April 14, 2014
Junior A
Glin 1-12
Athea 0-10
We played Athea in The County Intermediate League last Saturday evening in Glin. On the evening we were missing close to a dozen players so our squad was tested to the limit. Athea started the game much the brighter & led at half-time by 0-07:1-01 and if the truth be known this score didn't do their 1st half dominance justice as they also had a number of wides with our only 2 1st half scores coming from a fortuitous goal from Philip Moloney and a Darren Sheehan point.
In the second half however we completely turned things around with improved performances all over the field with great performances coming from Michael Stack, Stephen Shine, Kieran McMahon, Brian Donovan, Kevin & Michael Sweeney, Philip Moloney, Padraig Costello and especially Edmond Horan and man of the match Darren Sheehan who looked to be returning to his old form by scoring 11 points from our total, a remarkable tally but just reward for the hard work he has put in already this season at the training field.
It was a great team performance in the second half & let's hope we can build on that performance in the weeks ahead with the Championship opener only 2 weeks away.
We also received a walkover from Newcastle West in the West Junior League last Thurs night.
Junior B
Athea 0-7
Glin 2-11
Our Junior B West League campaign began with a trip to Athea last Friday evening. Ger Lyons got us on the scoreboard with an early pointed free and a fine curling point from out on the right wing. It was followed up with another pointed free from Ollie Wallace and a point from Paddy Killeen. Athea battled back to level the game but veteran forward Peadar Mulvihill used his experience to bury a goal just before half time to leave the score 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of Glin. We began the second half strongly with Paddy Killeen getting another 2 points. Dave Fitzgerald made an instant impact when entering the fray, crashing the ball the back of the net after some brilliant interplay in our full forward line. Dave also capitalised on a misjudged kick out to slot the ball over the bar to leave us firmly in control. Even when Athea attacked, our backs especially Johna, Timmy and David Sullivan stood firm to snuff out any scoring opportunities. Our determination was causing major problems and as a result of this pressure, Ger Lyons landed two monster frees from around 50m out. Kevin Sweeney tacked on another point before the finish to leave the final score, 2-11 to 0-7.
