Féile Hurling Quarter Final 8/4/2014 Adare 4-7 Monaleen 4-3
Last Wednesday evening the Monaleen U14s put up a great display against Adare in the Féile quarter final and can consider themselves to be very unlucky to have lost out.It was the type of game with just a puck of the ball being the difference between the sides. Another few minutes of play may have been enough to swing the game Monaleen's way, as the momentum shifted a number of times in this match. Adare picked off the first score with a good point, but Monaleen soon replied with a superbly taken point from Paul Power. Soon afterwards, David Crampton finished off a good Monaleen move, scoring a goal and putting Monaleen in the driving seat. Adare came back with a goal of their own, but Brian O'Donnell finished off an excellent move after slick passing from Jack Canny and Harry Gleeson. Monaleen's defence was operating at full tilt with Adare being denied space to work. The excellent back three of Conor Deegan, Cillian Toland and David Leahy kept Adare at bay, while the half back-line of Micheal O'Hanrahan, Sean O'Kane and Eoghan McCarthy provided further solid cover, linking up well with midfield. William Campbell very bravely prevented a certain Adare goal at point blank range, and took a heavy knock to his legs in the process. The bravery embodied the great spirit being shown by his teammates, and inspired them to keep going. Thankfully, William was back on his feet a few minutes later. Harry Gleeson scored a superb point, Niall McGrath made a great catch and shot, but it fell into the goalkeeper's grasp, while Paul Power raised another white flag from a well taken free. Adare kept in the game with another goal before half-time, with the teams taking a break with Monaleen two points ahead 2-3 to 2-1. After the break, Adare levelled quickly with two quick points, before Monaleen pulled clear with well taken goals from David Crampton and Sean O'Kane, aided in no small part by Cathal McCarthy's great work in midfield. . David McMahon and Paul Ross were introduced for Monaleen and provided fresh energy in this frenetic battle. The battle heated up and Adare tried to drive through the Monaleen defence, picking off points to pare back the deficit. Eventually they got in for a couple of goals to pull clear. With time running out and Monaleen 4 points down, Caolan Madden flashed a lovely ground stroke across the goal. It seemed to be headed for the corner of the goal to set up a grandstand  finish, but it just went wide. With Monaleen applying the pressure, alas, time ran out, and so it is Adare who progress to the semi final. It was a sporting contest played in good conditions and its one of those games where is a shame any team had to lose.
