County Senior Football Championship Quarter Final:

Newcastlewest is the venue this Saturday evening when our senior footballers take on Fr. Casey’s with a place in the county semi final where Oola await the winners on offer. We come into the game off the back of a fantastic performance against Galbally in round five and will have to put in at minimum the same level of performance if not raise it another few decibel levels if we are to overcome a youthful Fr. Casey’s side backboned by an array of underage talent. We advanced to the quarter final with three wins from our five group games, with comprehensive wins over Na Piarsaigh and Galbally as well as victory by the slenderest of margins in round 3 over Drom/Broadford. Our two defeats in the group phase came against near neighbours Newcastlewest in round 2 following a disappointing performance in Knockaderry and Oola in round 4. The Abbeyfeale men for their part come into Saturday’s knockout encounter having come second in the group with the only blemish on their report card coming in round 2 when they suffered a four-point defeat to defending county champions Adare. Along the way they have scored impressive victories over St. Senan’s, Ballylanders, Ballysteen and Monaleen to come finish in second place in group 1. Both sides met at the same venue in 2018 in round 4 of the championship, on that occasion we bucked the recent championship trend between the two sides and came away with a 0.11 to 0.7 victory to secure our passage to the quarter finals. Our championship record against Fr. Casey’s over the past decade has been quite disappointing, so far in 2019 we have yet to win two championship games in succession but there would be no better time than this Saturday evening to put together back to back wins with the added incentive of a place in the county semi-final on offer for the winner. Saturday’s game throws in at 5.30 in Newcastlewest and is proceeded by the County Intermediate Football quarter final between Gerard Griffins and Rathkeale. We would encourage all of our supporters to make the short journey to Newcastlewest and lend your vocal support to the players and management as they look to advance to the county semi final for the first time since 2013.
