Patrickswell club notes

May 20, 2019

SENIOR HURLERS: The Senior hurlers had a busy and mixed week with two matches in four days.  In the opening fixture, Patrickswell made the short journey to Ballybrown in the All-County Hurling League.  Darragh Ahern scored the opening point within thirty seconds.  However, Ballybrown blitzed the 'Well with two goals in a minute that ultimately determined the course of the match. Patrickswell settled themselves into the match and reduced the deficit to 2-1 to 0-5 after fifteen minutes.  The Clarina men increased their tempo and dominated the remainder of the first half, scoring a third goal and racking up more points.  At the interval, Ciaran Carey's men trailed by 3-9 to 0-7.

The second half began with a point from Kevin O'Brien; however Ballybrown responded with three points in quick succession.  Jack Kelleher kept the 'Well in touch with three consecutive scores to make the scoreline 0-11 to 3-12. There was a flicker of hope when Patrickswell notched their first goal, but Ballybrown were able to maintain the gap.  With ten minutes left in the game, Ballybrown were cruising at 3-15 to 1-12.  Jack Kelleher had a strong finish to the match, scoring four unanswered points.  The final result was a 3-15 to 1-16 defeat.

The next match was a rolled-up League and City Championship encounter with Monaleen in Claughaun.  There was a high tempo start to the match as early points were exchanged. Monaleen's impressive penalty was immediately cancelled out by Jason Gillane's close-range goal. Kevin O'Brien was in sparkling form as he contributed three points to put Patrickswell 1-6 to 1-4 ahead after fifteen minutes.  Jack Kelleher, Andrew Carroll and Jason Gillane registered on the scoreboard to put the 'Well ahead by 1-12 to 1-8 at half-time.

The second half began with an attacking onslaught from Patrickswell that overwhelmed Monaleen.  Paul O'Brien produced a goal within two minutes of the restart, while Darragh Ahern and Jack Kelleher added fresh points. When Jason Gillane's second goal of the contest hit the net, Patrickswell were 3-14 to 1-9 ahead.  There was no reduction in effort, with Kevin O'Brien leading the charge and racking up three more points to his personal tally.  Paul O'Brien and young Shane Hannon contributed more points before Kevin O'Brien dispatched a fourth goal to the net.  Monaleen closed the game with two points as the 'Well triumphed by 4-20 to 1-15.
