Limerick’s performance against Cork fell a long way below the high standards that John Kiely has set for his team.

The defeated manager described the Rebels as the ‘hungrier’ team in his post-match interview with RTE’s ‘The Sunday Game Live’.

“Bottom line is it was a below-par performance and we paid a heavy price for it, simple as that,” he remarked.

The Liam MacCarthy Cup holders were 1-11 to 0-12 ahead at the halfway stage but they played second fiddle to the Leesiders on the resumption.

“We just never seemed to get to the pitch of it in the second-half. Our work-rate wasn’t strong enough. Cork just seemed to get to the ball before us, I think that was one of the aspects of the second-half - they were always first to the ball in the second-half.

“They just seemed the hungrier team and they got the result for it.”

The Treaty County have two weeks to lick their wounds before travelling down to Walsh Park to take on Waterford. On a more bullish note, he concluded: “There’s definitely the wherewithal within that dressing room for these guys to turn it around.

“They’ve worked hard, they know they’ve the work done. Okay, they had a poor second-half today. There’s three more games to go, we will have a say in this championship yet there’s no doubt and they’ll work hard to make sure that they have.”
