Monagea was the venue on Sunday evening last. We had almost a full team out and won after a well contested game. Dylan O’Connell made an intermediate debut, building on the excellence he showed in U21 minor, U21 and junior B. a dedicated hurler from his younger days. Unfortunately the correspondent’s notes have gone A.W.O.L. (the dog is suspect no 1) but hopefully they’ll turn up (if the dog got them they are unlikely to) and there’ll be an account in the Weekly Observer next week. Hopefully.

BILLY’S LIMERICK TAKE BIG FOOTBALL SCALP! Unheralded, written off, the most under of underdogs, the Limerick senior footballers caused the surprise of the weekend in Gaelic football, playing well and winning well v Liam Kearn’s favoured Premier at Semple Stadium on Saturday evening. Three Magpies led the way, manager Billy Lee, captain and Laoch na h-Imirthe (by the papers) Ian Corbett 1-2 and Jamie Lee 0-4. The team now moves on to play Cork in the semi-final. Cork will be overwhelming favourites, but so was Goliath when he med David. Well done and onwards and upwards Billy, Ian, Jamie and Limerick senior footballers, giving their all for their county.

There is a big Newcastle West involvement in the minor game. Pa Keane is on stats, Ethan Hurley, younger son of Willie, grandson of former Newcastle West stalwart Moss, and Michael Cremin, son of Eoin, grandson of Mike of early 60s fame, are on the panel (Brian Nix was on the minor team in 2018). Ethan is tipped to start. All in the club congratulate the three and wish them and Limerick all the best. Pairc na nGael wil be packed on Sunday with most club players, mentors, supporters making the short trip. Limerick Abú.

U16 Football Div. 1 v St Kieran’s

Last Monday evening in bright, pleasant conditions in Coolcappa the U16s played their last football fixture before the examination break. Although breezy, the evening was ideal for a game of football. Nothing much separated the sides in the first 15 minutes and the teams exchanged point for point. Then in a good build-up of passing play the Magpies got a breakthrough when Con Hayes got Newcastle West’s first goal. Not long after, Sean Geraghty was brought down when one on one with the St Kieran’s full back, and the resulting penalty was coolly finished to the back of the net by Leon Barry. Half time score 2-7 to 0-6 in favour of Newcastle West. Despite playing down the hill and having the breeze in the second half it was the home team????? that started the brighter and within a 3 minute they spell had clawed back the Newcastle lead, so and all to play for. The Newcastle lads despite playing below par pushed on, however, tapping on a few more points, and goals by Sean Geraghty. A relieved team when the final whistle came and another football win under their belts. It is probably fair to say that the examination break has come at a good time. This performance was well under par but the boys dug deep to pull off a deserved win. The break will give time to regroup and re-energise. We wish all the boys sitting examinations in the next few weeks the very best with their studying and in the exams themselves.

Gutsy performance from our U11 Hurlers
In near perfect conditions for hurling Newcastle West welcomed Adare to Pairc na Gael last Saturday morning. Adare may have fancied themselves to control this match, but the gutsy performance by our young Newcastle West hurlers left no-one in doubt that our boys will hold their own with the best of them. While Adare edged on tactics picking out team mates with precision short passes our lads to a man stood up and brought the game to Adare from the off. After a few shots off target, Declan O'Grady opened the scoring with a well taken point. A lovely ball from our half backs split the Adare defense for Declan to run onto and breaking a tackle he struck the ball to the back of the net. Shortly after the referee correctly overruled the umpires and awarded Darragh O'Keeffe his first point of the match. Rory Vaughan and Tristan Kirwan were rock solid in defense, giving an exhibition of blocking and hooking, clearing everything Adare sent their way. Adare were rattled and took a long while to settle into the match, however they finished the first half stronger taking the lead with two goals in quick succession, lobbing high balls into the square that our boys had trouble dealing with. Adare tapped over a few points at the start of the second half before the first of 3 Newcastle West second half goals put the home side in control of the match. Patrick Ryan showed great determination winning a ball out wide and sent it into Declan O'Grady to strike his second goal. Mark Cussen is showing great promise in goals, oozing confidence to deal with wayward Adare shooting, and clearing the ball well to midfield. The towering Leon O'Flynn, who dominated the half back line all day, caught an Adare puckout and drove it in for Declan to rifle home for his hat trick. Adare responded with a goal and a point to stay in touch before Tiernan Horgan got off the mark with a point from a well taken free and followed it up with a rasping shot for the umpire to raise the green flag. As fulltime approached Adare needed a goal to level the match. Newcastle West dug deep and repelled the onslaught but right at the death Adare fired an unstoppable shot to the back of the net just before the fulltime whistle sounded. It was a fair result in the end. The future is bright for these young magpies who hurled well all over the field showing their hard work in training is paying off.

Under 6 Training
Training of the u6’s is up and running, football and hurling, at the ball alley/all weather on Fridays from 6 to 7.15p.m. approximately. Well organised, experienced and committed coaches. Already you can see progress, the basics (the correct grip, the dominant hand on top, the Willie Walsh swing, strike on the ground of both sides in hurling, the catch, pick-up, kick with either foot in football) skill emphasised, a lot of fun and satisfaction for all. Plenty pats on the back for effort, encouragement. Mol an óige. New players 6 and 5 in 2019 always welcome.
Summer Camp
Newcastle West GAA Summer Camp will take place from Monday 1st July to Friday July 5th. The camp is available to all children born between 2005 and 2013. The cost for the camp is €65. This includes 5 days of camp and Newcastle West GAA gear of jersey, shorts and socks. Registration events will be held as an opportunity for the children to try on sample gear for sizing to ensure you purchase the correct gear. CAMOGIE
Congratulations to Newcastle West Camogie on their victory over Killeedy in the Senior Co. A League Final. There was plenty GAA support for the senior camogie on their big day for their big game. The mentors are big GAA stalwarts, Jamie Lee, James Kelly, Pa Meehan, Joe McMahon, mentors for the first time with a camogie team and doing a great job. (Margaret Delee is on first aid with our inter hurlers and is also first aid with the senior camógs. Great to see GAA people supporting the camógs. Well done to all.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
We congratulate the boys and girls from the Courtney Boys NS, Scoil Iosaf NS and Killoughteen NS on celebrating their First Holy Communion day last Saturday. Best wishes to the boys and girls of Gaelscoil O’Doghair doing the same thing this Saturday, and we hope the sun shines for your special day.
