SENIOR HURLERS

Our Senior Hurlers were back in action only a few short weeks after the All Ireland Club final defeat to Cuala.

First up on our defence of the Daly Cup were Doon in the Gaelic Grounds.

The jury was out as to whether our lads would be fresh enough after their exertions of 2017 but they answered any doubt emphatically.

From the very start they showed they were ready and met fire with fire.

Conor Boylan for our first score converting a brilliant chance created by Cathal King to the back of the net.

With a few positional switches in effect the lads bedded in quite comfortably most notably Will O Donoghue at centre back who was excellent throughout along with last years captain Cathall King in the middle of the field.

The Dempsey brothers continued where they left off and showing great leadership and sublime skills throughout the game.

Shane Dowling was working well at centre forward and he showed his prowess from placed balls and also rattled the back of the Doon net midwayt through the second half.

Our two corner forwards Ronan Lynch and Adrian Breen contributed nicely to our tally both raising green flags in the second half and adding some important points also.

Credit to Will our captain who pulled off a magnificent block to snuff out danger along with a brilliant save by Podge Kennedy late in the game.

Overall a good team performance and one which will give us the confidence going into next weekend's clash in round 2 versus Ballybrown

We wish Paul Beary our new manager and Will O Donoghue our new captain the very best for 2018.

We also wish Alan Cunningham our Senior trainer the very best in recovery from recent operation.

Final Score on Sunday N Piarsaigh 4-15 Doon 1-16.

Team Podge Kennedy, Kieran Kennedy, Mike Casey, Niall Buckley, Jerome Boylan, Will O Donoghue (capt), Tommy Grimes, Cathal King, Alan Dempsey, ConorBoylan, Shane Dowling, David Dempsey,  Ronan Lynch, Kevin Downes, Adrian Breen

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS

Our second string were also in action on Sunday in round 1 of the Intermediate Champion ship versus Effin.

Played in Bruff it was to be a long day foe many of the panel who were also togged out earlier with the seniors.

We began with quite a strong team and opinion was that we would do well on the day.

The lads hurled well and matched the early scores by Effin.

However the concession of a fairly soft goal mid way through the half was the main difference between the sides as the half drew to a close.

Effin lead by 5 at the break 1-8 to 0-6

The game was very competitive but we definately held the ascendancy for much of the half.

James O Brien and Brian Hartnett fielded the world of ball but scores were scarce.

We did manage to claw the lead back to a single point in the closing stages but unfortunately Effin raised their second green flag following a mix up in defence.

That gave them the cushion they needed and sealed their victory on 2-13 to 0-12 scoreline.

Overall a little disappointing but nevertheless plenty to work on.

Next up are Granagh Ballingarry next weekend.

Team: Evan Condon, Pa Guinane, Mark Buckley, Evan O Brien, Brian Hartnett, James O Brien, Conor Houlihan,Aidan Hennessy, Mike Foley, Dean McLoughlin,Gordon Brown, John Madden, Will Henn, David Sheppard, Dylan Cronin.subs used.Evan Gilvarry

AIB CLUB TEAM OF THE YEAR

Huge congratulations to Mike Casey, Cathall King, Alan Dempsey, Ronan Lynch, Adrian Breen and Kevin Downes all selected on the AIB Club team of the year.

A nice evening was enjoyed by the lads in Croke Park Hotel.

A wonderful achievement from all the lads who gave us so much enjoyment all year long.

GENERAL MOVEMENT SESSIONS

Well done to Tommy Cronin who has put together a very enjoyable program for all 7 to 10 year olds in a general movements session.

Each Tuesday night he welcomes all youngsters 7 to 10 to Na Piarsaigh to try this class.

It will no doubt help develop coordination, movement skills and athleticism.

All new comers are welcome

MINOR HURLERS

Our minor Hurlers under the new management of Murty O Donoghue and John McKeogh opened their championship account with an away date versus a strong Garryspillane side.

We got a tonic start to the game with a goal and a point on the board inside 5 minutes courtesy of James Daly.

We hurled well in that opening period and got some good scores and when the half came to a close the Bouncers led by 2 points. 1-8 to 1-6.

On the change over we began well and the tempo was good but within the space of a few minutes found ourselves 8 points down after we were hit for 2 quick fire goals.

Try as we may to claw back the deficit it was our hosts who finished the stronger

Final score: Garryspillane 3-15 Na Piarsaigh 1-10.
