Kildimo/Pallaskenry Club Notes

U-21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2-9 St. Patrick's 2-10. Our U-21 footballers were desperately unlucky to lose out by the narrowest of margins with a late score giving a very capable St. Pat's side the victory. It was a strong Kildimo/Pallaskenry side that took to the field, and played some very nice football in what were poor conditions after a lot of rain over the weekend. Our opponents started the brighter, reeling off the first three scores but we responded admirably to take the lead by getting the next four without reply. A fine run from the excellent Conor Staff opened up the space and he found Tom O'Shea, who turned and lashed over our opening score. A lovely pass from Dylan Corrigan then found Darren O'Connell who swept over another score. Shortly after, we were on level terms as Adam Butler curled over a glorious score from distance.

We had our first real goal chance of the game when Tom O'Shea offloaded to Dylan Corrigan but Dylan was unlucky to see his shot flash right across the face of goal and wide. But we would continue our dominance and take the lead for the first time when Darren O'Connell cut in and curled a point over with his left foot. Our midfield duo of Lorcan O'Leary and Ross Mann were putting in a huge shift, and our direct running from deep was causing the St. Pat's defence some problems. Conor Staff was also covering a huge amount of ground while Evan Considine and Shane Gloster were supporting the half-forwards well from their wing-back positions. Defensively, we were also doing a good job and Jamie Hickey was called on to make a fine save to prevent a St. Pat's goal, when he pushed a shot out for a '45. However, despite our best efforts, our rearguard was breached before the half-time break as St. Pat's sneaked a goal; giving them a two-point lead. Half-time score: Kildimo/Pallaskenry 0-4 St. Pat's 1-3.

We started well in the second half, more direct running from Ross Mann carved open the St. Pat's backline and he was able to find Conor Staff who popped over his first score of the game. Our backs were also putting in some big shifts, with Steven O'Brien and Martin Neville making a huge number of tackles and interceptions in the corner-back positions and Shaun Barry and Alan Ryan monitoring the centre well. But after a good start to the second half, St. Pat's found a bit of momentum and reeled off a number of scores without reply. They managed to turn their one-point lead into a five-point lead before we got on the scoresheet again. Conor Staff converted a free before Ross Mann raced through and popped the ball over the bar. But we would soon be hit with a hammer blow, shortly after St Pat's scored a free, they would break through for their second goal of the game. This meant the Rhebogue side held a seven-point lead about halfway through the half.

But our players should admirable spirit to turn the game around and that they did in spectacular fashion. Substitute Sam Ross scored with his very first touch off the bench, swinging the point over from a very narrow angle. This was followed up with a fantastic goal from Conor Staff, who went on an excellent solo run and finished neatly past the keeper and the game was now back on. The momentum was now well and truly with us, and we kept creating chances. Adam Butler would soon cleverly pop the ball over the bar as he picked up a bit of space and it was now just a two-point game. Then Ross Mann struck a high ball out the field towards the edge of the square which caused mayhem in the St. Pat's goalmouth and it was his midfield partner, Lorcan O'Leary, who was on hand to touch the ball home. It meant that we had turned a seven-point deficit into a one-point lead; an eight-point turnaround with only minutes left.

But sadly, the efforts involved in turning the game around were huge and a strong St. Pat's team were always going to bounce back. We did have a goal chance saved which could have given us a four-point lead but St. Pat's would go down the other end, win a free and tap it over to level the game. With both sides fighting for the chance to get the winning score, sadly that chance fell to our opponents and they were able to convert. Jamie Hickey was also a late hero in saving a St. Pat's penalty to prevent them killing the game off but sadly, we were unable to go down the other end and get a leveller. It was very disappointing to lose after showing such heroics in coming back into the game but it was an impressive fighting performance all the same.
