O'Connor, Jimmy

The Late Jimmy O'Connor New players may come and old players may go, its about a great football legend and Jimmy was great, a full or half-forward, a real bag of tricks and starred in the final in the year sixty-six. Times were tough in the sixties. We hadn't a lot, didn't complain and made the most of the little we got. Life was happier then, no panic or rush, no changing rooms then, with the clothes hanging up on a whin or a bush, good football was played. Not like today, ducking and diving and looking for frees, the referee seems confused; a yellow and red and off you will go, it was different then, you caught it and kicked it, the ref played the part and let the game flow. Many great players are gone. JJ O'Connor and Jimmy, Ray Beirne gone too, Stanley and Josie to name but a few, and I am sure up above many games are now played, great craic on the side, line as the game ebbs and flows while the lads on the bench keep them all on their toes. "Jimmy's of Dromod" is known far and wide. The name will live on, a real "Port of call" as the boat people say, if you wanted a pint a steak or a stew you were served with a smile by the Captain and Crew. A generous man when you called to the pub, and he was good to the village, the County and Club. May he Rest in Peace R.M Courtesy of the Leitrim Observer 24th December 2003
