Ballinamore club notes

March 14, 2017

Frank McKeon - Great Cannaboe man - RIP

Frank McKeon was involved as a player with successful Seán O'Heslin's teams spanning a period of three decades. Frank was corner back on the team which took the 1956 Senior title ending a seventeen year famine for the club. He then partnered the legendary Thomas Galligan at midfield when the club took the 1964 Championship. He was part of the Ballinamore three-in-a-row winning team from 1967 to 1969 and was still involved with the 1972 and 1973 winning teams. In 1968, Frank went with the club on a memorable trip to New York. On the 22 September Ballinamore played New York, a team that were preparing to travel to Ireland to play the All Ireland Champions, Down, in what was then called the World Cup. New York won by two points but it was one of Ballinamore's greatest displays. Frank was also part of the construction team of P J McGovern, Charlie McCormack and himself that built the original dressingrooms at the Park. By the 1990s, Frank was residing in Drumshanbo and he was team manager with Allen Gaels when they took their first ever Senior Championship title, ironically, defeating Seán O'Heslin's in the final in 1991. The club extends sympathy to his wife Bernadette and his son and daughters. Peileadóir den scoth agus fear uasal freisin. Trócaire Dé air.

SCÓR
Aisling Maxwell wins County Scór

The County Final of Scór Sinsear took place in the Mayflower Drumshanbo last night March 11. The venue was ideal for such a small entry and crowd. The disciplines that are going forward to the Connacht final in Tubbercurry on March 25 were top class. In the Amhránaíocht Aonair (Solo Singing) eight clubs were listed as taking part but just four competed, with our girl Aisling Maxwell taking the title. Aisling is no stranger to Scór and won two County titles in Scór na nÓg, in 2004 and in 2007. In the latter year, she also won a Connacht title and went on to represent the club in the All Ireland Final in Athlone. As the years went by, and she is still a young lassie, she competed in 2012 and won her first senior title and the following year in 2013 she repeated her success and won a Connacht title but the top prize eluded her at the All Ireland once more. Aisling now goes on to represent the club and County in the Connacht finals in Tubbercurry on March 25.The clubs last visit to Tubbercurry in Scór was a sad affair and Leitrim Scór has suffered the consequences, by the decline in participation and it was evident again this year. In the recitation, Brendan was practicing for weeks, as Brendan does (ha ha), but unfortunately due to a family bereavement Brendan had to withdrew. We wish to offer our condolences to his sister Bernadette McKeon and all the family, relatives and friends on the death of Frank McKeon RIP. The table quiz took place prior to the above activity and due to football fixtures and family commitments our team had to withdraw at short notice. The best of luck to all winners in Connacht on March 25.

Leitrim U21

It was great to see so many Ballinamore men in the squad that took on Galway at the weekend and despite the defeat, we would like to pass on our best wishes to the lads - Well done to Donal Feely , Brian Leydon , Dean Mcgovern, Darren Maxwell, Niall McGovern, Luke Murphy  and Peter Reynolds.

ACL Division 4

Well done to the lads who started the league campaign with a great win over Achadh an Mheasa by a score of 3.12 to 1:3

U15

Well done to our Un15 Amalgamated team, with Kiltubrid who had their first game at the weekend, the team is called Cill Mór Gaels and they got their first win of the league campaign

Oughteragh Ladies

Well done to our two adult ladies teams who were victorious at the weekend. The second team kicked off with a very tough 3-11 to 2-13 win over Kiltubrid B in Division 3 on Saturday and that was followed up by the first team who defeated Dromahair B in Division 2 with a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-5 on Sunday. There were a number of excellent performances but huge credit must go to the younger contingent who impressed everyone; Abbi Sweeney played the full hour at wing back in each match and was one of the best players in both, Aoibhin McGoldrick dominated midfield on Saturday & Gracie Reilly did likewise in defense, Grainne Prior made her adult debut and performed brilliantly, whilst Laoise Moran King excelled in both games and scored 1-1 from play in the first. All in all, a great weekend for the ladies and there's plenty to build upon for the year ahead.

SOS- Shave our Sean and Dawn !Best of Luck to Sean and Dawn !

On the 1st of April 2017 an event will take place in the Poor Scholar, Ballinamore. The McKeon Family and friends will take part in a head shave. Dawn has recently been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and thankfully is on the road to recovery.  As part of her journey Dawn wishes to raise funds to further promote awareness of the issues faced by those diagnosed with this illness.

This event will include many people but one of the main features on the night will involve Dawn's dad Sean. The last time Sean was clean shaven was March 1970 and so, in support of his daughter, will shave his beard for the first time in 47 years.  Also on the night Dawn, her sisters and some of her friends will shave their heads, cut it short and donate their hair.

If you would like to help raise funds for this worthy cause, Sponsorship cards will be in circulation so dig deep and if you need any more information please contact Dawn on 086-3115647 or David McCabe 086- 0870456
