Leitrim Senior Championship Quarter Finals 2016: Against the Odds! Against the pundits! Aughawillan rose like a phoenix in the Championship Quarter Finals against County Champions Mohill, on Saturday evening in Ballinamore. Despite an early goal by Mohill, the Aughawillan men held their heads and rose to every challenge Mohill put their way. Changing game tactics and solidly taking point after point Aughawillan were fifteen minutes later to be ahead Mohill 1-0 to Aughawillan 0-06. Noel Plunkett had surely had his porridge that morning as he powered through time and time again relinquishing the ball from the Mohill hands and placing it centre field, Sean Quinn was relentless to prove that even a man of thirty can run faster than the average twenty something when he has a fire in his belly and a desire to win. Niall Beirne's athletic ability was surpassed only by tactical and strategic decision-making during the game, while Sean Fox and Pearce Dolan were resolute in bringing the ball forward with composure and confidence. Aughawillan were to strive forward with two further points before Mohill were given a free and the opportunity to score again leaving the score line Mohill 1-01 to Aughawillan 0-08. Mohill retain control from another free and a point is scored, tensions rise as a minute of overtime is announced. An excellent long run of various passes results in a score for Aughawillan, followed quickly by a second point for Aughawillan and the half time score is Mohill 1-02 to Aughawillan 0-10.
> The second half opened with Mohill resolved to power through, attaining a two point score increase, Rory Mc Tague skilful and experienced was knocked to the ground and needed medical attention though thankfully was able to resume play. Sean Flanagan substitutes Sean Fox. Augahwillan score a point in play, while resilient Mohill return a two point score, scoreline now stands Mohill 1-06 to Aughawillan 0-11. Tensions are insurmountable as the two teams score a point each and the Aughawillan background team are uncompromising that this is their day. There was a missed goal opportunity by Aughawillan but Morgan Quinn gets the point. Mohill volley and receive a point. Stephen Gilheany substitutes Rory Mc Tague. Five minutes to go, Aughawillan still lead 0-13 to Mohill 1-09. Moments later Mohill score a point, but the Aughawillan men are resilient in their stance that this is their day, unyielding, uncompromising they edge forward, scoring a point. Aughawillan display hard tackling, firm resolution, with little time left, Mohill have an opportunity for a replay but are fraught against the resolution of this band of warriors as the final whistle blows to the cheers of the crowd, Aughawillan 0-14 to Mohill 1.10. Aughawillan are through to the Semi Final of the Senior Championship 2016. Hon the Willies!! Willies Abú!!!
