Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Championship Game: It was a dismal Sunday evening in Pairc Sean, as Aughawillan took on St. Mary's in the Quarter finals of the Senior County Championship, but this did little to dampen the supporters who turned up in their droves to cheer their teams on. The whistle blew but with bad weather conditions, a gummy pitch and continuous down pour of rain, nine minutes in, there had been no score. At this point it looked like St Marys would get the first point of the game but a wide drew short, put the ball back to centre field where Mark Plunkett scored the first point of the game. As the St Marys men fought back Pearce Dolan scuppered the chances of a St Marys point. Some harmful play in front of the Willies goals resulted in a goal for St. Marys. Barry Priors work rate and tackling skills were displayed to a high extent as he removed the ball from the dangerous area and passed elegantly to Mark Plunkett who along with Stephen Gilheany were quick to follow up the field. A free was awarded to Aughawillan and Ciaran Gilheany took and scored with ease. Michael Quinn, Stephen Gilheany, with Declan Mc Govern in the wings showcased fitness and hand passing, leaving the ball to Sean Flanagan to score a point in play. Morgan Quinn seized an opportunity and scored a point in play but the St Mary's men were equal in their approach to the game and followed quickly with a point for St. Mary's. St. Marys were disappointed with two wides and the pressure was on both teams to forge ahead. Ciaran Gilheany had a disappointing wide, before a free given to St. Mary's, was returned to them as a forty five and a point was scored for the Carrick on Shannon men. Score at half time stood at Aughawillan 0-04 to St. Mary's 1-02.
St Mary's came out to the second half with a fire in their gut and a free given to them allowed the first point of the second half. Seconds later a forty five for Aughawillan was taken and scored by Morgan Quinn. St Mary's had another wide and it was the quick hands of Colin Maguire in the Aughawillan goals that saved a deadly ball in play. St. Mary's were allowed another free which resulted in no score. Pearce Dolan to Niall Beirne to Noel Plunkett to Ciaran Gilheany who was fouled, resulted in a free to Aughawillan which Morgan Quinn scored. Fergal Mc Tague who showed himself as fearless on a number of occasions, had a hard luck miss of a point to the disappointment of the crowd. Fast concentrated play continued as St. Mary's drew on top of the Aughawillan men quickly, but Colin Maguire deflected the ball resulting in a forty five for St Mary's. St Mary's scored a point. Respectable tackling by Fergal Mc Tague resulted in a St. Mary's man over travelling allowing us a free. Some hard hitting attacks by the Aughawilan men resulted in a forty five, Sean Flanagan stepped up to the plate but was unsuccessful to score. Shane Flanagan took to the field and was given a free by an eagle eyed referee, Morgan Quinn took the free and scored. Mark Plunkett displayed great talent with a left footed point in play in fast action. While cool and collected, Shane Flanagan took and scored a point to seal the deal for the Aughawillan men. Tensions were high as many looked at their watches, the St. Marys men were resilient and fought back with a point that would have been only for Colin Maguire. Gary Plunkett stepped up and was unlucky with a point that hit the side bar, while a free awarded to Ciaran Gilheany was pointed and scored from an awkward angle to the side of the goals. The Carrick men were irrepressible as they drove forward and in the final seconds of the game took aim for a score, which was caught and kicked wide by Michael Quinn, as the whistle blew. Final Score Aughawillan 0-12 to St. Mary's 1-04. Willies Abú!! Yahoo!!! Directly after the game, the draw was completed and it was deemed that Aughawillan would go on to play Glencar Manorhamillton in the Semi Finals of the Senior Championship. Go n-eirí an t-ádh leat. Monster Bingo: Aughawillan GAA will host a Monster Bingo in the Marquee at the Ballymac Inn, Ballymagovern on Sunday the 30th August at 3pm. With €3,500 in prizes. St Brigid's Minors: Our Minors will play St Felim's on Wednesday the 26 August at 7pm in Ballinamore. This is round four of the Championship and all available supporters are asked to please come out and support the lads.

St Brigid's U14: Our U14 team played Gortlettragh this past week. A fine effort was put in by the lads and the final score of St. Brigids 5-03 to Gortlettragh 3-13 is testament to an exciting game. With the Championship now over for the U14 age group, we would like to thank the mentors and parents for their dedication to the sport and club this year.

Congratulations: Congratulations to two groups in our area who have done us all proud, Ballinamore Area Community Games All Ireland winners, U10 boys who won a gold medal and U12 girls who brought home a bronze medal. Well done to all involved.

Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others: Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others continues this Thurs at 7pm in Aughawillan. An opportunity to get out in the fresh air, learn some new skills, get some exercise and have a bit of craic. No previous experience is necessary. All welcome.

Sympathy: Aughawillan GAA wishes to sympathise with Patricia, Marie, Bernie, Mickey, Seamus, Thomas and the entire Quinn family on the death of Nora Quinn. Nora an ardent Aughawillan GAA supporter for her entire life, who instilled a love of the GAA in her children and grandchildren, will be sadly missed in the community and by her neighbours and friends.
