All Ireland Winners!
It was fitting that the bunting was still hanging and the stage was still set as we welcomed home our returning heroes from the community games all Ireland finals held in Athlone. First up was the Community games All Ireland U10 champions who defeated teams from Leinster, had an extra time win over the Ulster Champions and a final win against Shannon where the lads who were impressive all weekend won by a score of 6:05 to 4:04 to claim the title of All Ireland Winners !.

The Ballinamore area U12 girls who were also representing Leitrim were equally impressive as the boys and were narrowly defeated in the Semi Finals but still went on to claim bronze and third place over all.

The Celebrations which kicked off in style in Athlone were quickly added to as bonfires in Fenagh and Ballinamore welcomed our young stars home in a cavalcade of flashing lights and car horns led by the flashing blue of the Gardaí.

The stage was set and the young players were presented to the cheering crowd on the festival platform to receive the richly deserved adulation.

Overall this is a wonderful achievement for the young people of the Ballinamore region and bodes well for the future of football in south Leitrim, special thanks must go to not just the players for making this possible but also to the mentors, managers and parents who helped make this victory possible. Leitrim Abu!

The Leitrim GAA 1994 Huddle

There are few Leitrim people who do not remember that famous day, 21 years ago, when Declan Darcy lifted the Nestor Cup. Much has been written about this momentous journey and everyone has their own treasured memory of that summer 21 years ago.  As part of National Heritage Week, a nostalgic evening of remembrance is taking place in Ballinamore Library on Friday August 28th at 8pm.  This will be an 'up for the match' type event led by Seán Ó Súilleabháin where those present will discuss the lead up, the matches, the aftermath and the positive impact of Leitrim's historic championship of 1994.  There will also be an exhibition of memorabilia, including letters, cards, telegrams of good wishes and congratulations from home and abroad, sent to the County Board Secretary, Tommy Moran and the football used in the Connacht final will also be on display.  For further information please contact Mary Conefrey on 0719645567.  Don't miss it!

New Lotto venue
Tábhairne an Bhainc is the newest Lotto venue in town and we had our first Lotto draw there on Monday night. It is great to see a new pub in town and, especially, in a historic building which was a bank from the early 1890s. Good also to see it with a name "as Gaeilge" adding to the town's reputation as the town with the most Irish signage outside of the Gaeltacht. Best wishes to Ossie Costello and his staff in their new venture. Go n-eirí libh.
