Leitrim look to underage

August 07, 2015

Leitrim GAA are one of four counties to undergo a radical new underage system for 2016.

The Connacht county along with Down, Cork and Wexford are to take part in the new initiative which will see the minor grade replaced by an under-17 grade, while under-14 and 16 shall be replaced by under-13 and 15.

The initiative is being ran by the GAA's Minor Review Committee and Leitrim chairman Terence Boyle revealed to the Leitrim Observer that they were keen to go ahead with the plan.

"The plan is only in its initial stages and we are meeting with Croke Park to discuss it before the plan is brought before our clubs but I think that we are very much in favour of this system which will isolate our underage structures from our senior competitions," said Boyle.

"With U17 players no longer allowed to play senior, this move will free up space on our calendar and should mean more games and more meaningful competition at a better time of the year.

"It means that we can run competitions at the best time of the year without having to fix competitions around senior games or county underage games and it frees up everything for clubs and county boards."
