Gortletteragh GAA club notes

July 28, 2015

Senior Championship:
We got our senior championship campaign back on track with a good win over Dromahair in Pairc Sean on Sunday last.  We struggled a bit in the first half but two late scores left us only one point down at half time and we started the second half in the same fashion.  A good goal from Barry Tiernan gave us the lead which we never relinquished and at the final whistle we were well ahead by 3-9 to 0-11.  Next up is St Mary's in two weeks; this is a game we need to get something from in order to avoid a play off to reach the quarter final.  The team was Conan Clarke, Mark Mitchell, David Mulvey, Kevin McGrath, Evan Ward, Niall Woods, James Campbell, Ciaran Egan, Cathal Quinn, Francie Flynn, Cathal McCrann, Barry Tiernan, Colm Duffy, Jack Heslin and Conor Reynolds.  Subs:  Neil Quinn and Terry Kellegher.

Sponsorship:
Our senior team were decked out in a new set of jerseys kindly sponsored by Jimmy & Kathleen Fox of Fox's Bar, Tooman.  The club is very grateful to be sponsored by Fox's Bar - a well-known pub all over Leitrim and the surrounding counties.  Let's hope the jerseys will bring us lots of luck in our championship campaign this year and in the years to come.

Jim McGovern R.I.P.
The death took place last weekend of Jim McGovern formerly of Cattan but living in Mohill in recent years.  Jim or "Big Jim" as he was affectionately known was a great Gortletteragh supporter and he was known to don the green and gold if numbers were tight.  Standing around 6ft6" he must have been a fearsome sight for an opposing junior forward but they would have found him nothing more than a gentle giant happy to help out his beloved Gortletteragh.  His nephew Thomas was a key player with the club down through the years while his other nephew Seamus who runs a very successful construction company has been a great sponsor of the club on several occasions.  We offer our deepest sympathy to Thomas, Seamus and the rest of the McGovern family.  May Jim rest in peace.

Junior A Championship:
On Saturday next our Junior A championship squad are back in action when they take on Sean O'Heslin's in Pairc Sean at 7.30pm.  After losing our first game the pressure will be on to get back to winning ways, this won't be easy against our opponents who had a big win over Drumkeerin in their first match.

Under 14's:
Our under 14's got their championship campaign going in the right direction when they defeated Glen Gaels in Glenfarne on Friday evening last.  Once again they let a big lead slip and only had two points to spare in the end.  Well done lads and thanks to the parents who brought the boys down for the game.  Team:  Killian McCauley, Tom Reel, Brendan Naughton, Oisin Niblock, Brendan Davis, Jamie Quinn, Ciaran Reen, Shane Reynolds, Cian McNulty, Conor Niblock and Mark Reynolds.  Subs: James and Ryan Cunningham.  For the second time inside four days our U14's travelled to the other end of the county to take on Manorhamilton and once again came out victorious.  In the end they had six points to spare after a very exciting match in which all players worked hard as a team.  Odhran Heslin returned to the squad after a spell on the sideline due to an injury.

Kellogg's Cul Camp:
The GAA Cul Camp took place in the park last week where our eight to thirteen year old girls and boys had a fun-filled week of sporting activities. A total of 73 children attended the week's activities, mostly from Gortletteragh with a few from neighbouring clubs and a few who were on holidays in the area. A number of coaches were in attendance including our own club members, Orlaith Heslin, Niall Woods and Mark Heslin, thanks to all the coaches for giving the children a great week.
