Josie Murray, one of Leitrim's greatest ever footballers, has passed away.
Named on county's Team of the Millennium, Josie first came to notice as centre-fielder on the Leitrim minor team that won Connacht honours in 1956 before losing the All-Ireland final to Dublin. He went on to represent his county at senior level for many years, but had the misfortunate of losing five Connacht finals in 1957, '58, '59, '60 and '63.
He also played for Connacht in the Railway Cup between 1957 and '60, but success also eluded him here. Josie was also an accomplished hurler and won two Connacht junior titles with Leitrim in 1969 and '70.
With his beloved St. Mary's, he won two Leitrim SFC medals in 1958 and '74. Josie was better known in more recent times as one of the chiefs organisers of the Leitrim GAA Golf Classic. In addition to this, he was one of the founder-members of the Leitrim GAA Supporters' Club in Dublin.
May he rest in peace.
