Twenty-twelve champions relegated

September 11, 2014

Two years after winning the Leitrim SFC, Melvin Gaels have been relegated to intermediate ranks.

The 2012 county kingpins took the plunge to the second tier following a shock 1-11 to 0-13 defeat to Annaduff in the relegation play-off final at Shane McGettigan Park on Sunday.

The Kinlough men were also relegated in 2010 but bounced back in incredible fashion with successive triumphs in the IFC and SFC.

They finished strongly on Sunday, reeling off the last three points of the match, but ultimately the loss of key players through emigration, transfers (county captain Emlyn Mulligan moved to Dublin after the 2012 success), suspension and retirement proved too much.
