THE SECOND CARRIGALLEN 10K ROAD RACE IN AID OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY IRELAND

Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) is delighted to announce the 2nd Annual 10K Road Race in Carrigallen, Co Leitrim on Saturday the 6th July. The route will take runners and walkers around the beautiful and picturesque landscape of Leitrim. Food and refreshment will be supplied throughout the day. All levels of fitness are catered for and all are welcome to take part, have fun and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. To date the run has raised over €4,000 for respite support services MDI provide to individuals and families living with muscular dystrophy and allied neuromuscular conditions in Leitrim.

The race is starting at Carrigallen GAA Park with registration open at 12.00pm. According to Katherine & Vinny Lyons from Carrigallen, members of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland "we are seeking as much support as possible this year as funding and donations to Muscular Dystrophy Ireland are considerably down in comparison to previous years. The 10K Road Race is growing every year and becoming a popular training day for the Dublin City Marathon in October". It is a fun, leisure event with the aim to raise vital funds for the respite support services MDI provide to individuals and families with muscular dystrophy. The Carrigallen 10K Road Race caters for all levels of fitness and can be used as a practice run or a family day out.

Muscular Dystrophy Ireland is a voluntary organisation which provides information and support to people with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions and their families through a wide range of support services. Families affected by the condition muscular dystrophy need different supports and MDI strives to provide services based on individual needs. It does this through the provision of: family support, youth support, emergency respite, youth activities and a National Resource Centre for Neuromuscular Conditions, Chapelizod Dublin. This centre supports all aspects of living with a neuromuscular condition from point of diagnosis, to the need for information through to direct support services that are required.

The centre incorporates a display area for aids and appliances and the use of specialized equipment e.g. hoist, slings, power chairs & profile beds etc. The centre also contains the Home from Home apartment a self-catering, wheelchair accessible three bed roomed apartment adapted to the highest specification to empower and promote independent living for people with physical & sensory disabilities. This apartment provides breaks for people with disabilities and their families. It is about ensuring that the disabled person is part of the community. It also provides the family with the opportunity to book the apartment as a whole family.

Proceeds from the race will be used towards the provision of the Respite Support Services the charity provides to 646 members. It is essential that those affected by muscular dystrophy, their carers and family members have adequate respite on a regular and frequent basis in order to support and maintain the physical and emotional health of all concerned. Respite is a means of giving carers a physical break from what is continuous and demanding work. Without this type of support, enormous strain both physical and emotional is experienced by carers. Weekend breaks, respite in the home, and youth and adult summer camps are offered to members and their families. Regular and secure funding for this respite service is essential, to enable members and families to have a good quality of living.

Race registration is just €10 per person and you can register online by visiting www.activeglobal.com. For further information on fundraising or volunteering at the event please contact Vinny & Katherine Lyons at 089 452 9351.
