Leitrim senior hurler Padraic McWeeney has admitted that the way Martin Cunniffe was removed as manager was handled wrong.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer as the players’ representative, McWeeney feels that Cunniffe deserved a lot more respect in the way he was treated.

Cunniffe was informed through the grapevine that a number of players wanted a change in manager for the coming year.

The Galway native had guided the county to Lory Meagher Cup success this year, but the players felt it was time for change.

Cunniffe spoke out at the time and stated that the way the matter was handled was very disappointing and McWeeney admits it could have been dealt with differently.

“What went on over the last few weeks regards Martin was unfortunate and wrong. I definitely think it could have been handled better. Martin and Dolores have given a huge amount over the years also,” said McWeeney.

He said: “I sat beside Michael Coleman and his wife at the PWC All-Stars and he did express his disappointment towards certain panel members and their absence on the night in relation to the whole situation.

“Michael Coleman has given a huge amount to this panel of players over the last five years and hasn’t asked for much, only honesty.”
