Leitrim captain Michael McWeeney believes that nerves played a part in their clash against London last Sunday.

The Connacht side limped to victory, but in doing so guaranteed promotion to FL3 for next year.

Leitrim were strong favourites to see off the challenge of the Exiles at Carrick on Shannon, but they looked out of sorts for long periods and McWeeney told the Leitrim Observer that it was a nervous display by them.

“Everyone was nervous, but in fairness, it was everyone’s dream,” said McWeeney. “When people tell you ‘don’t think about the elephant in the room’, you’re going to think about the elephant and definitely, you could see that nervousness in everyone and you could see it and hear it all around the ground.”

He added: “Terry said after the game that we just over-thought it. The one thing he has drilled into us is to get ahead of the ball, not coming back with it but none of us were getting ahead of the ball, we weren’t doing what we had been doing previous to this and everyone was nervous.”
