Portlaoise coach Tommy Mulligan has paid tribute to the work ethic of the players.

The Laois champions had to dig deep to see off Kildare's Sarsfields in the Leinster club SFC quarterfinal in what was a difficult week for the club as their manager Malachy McNulty's mother Violet passed away at the weekend.

Mulligan put the win down to the work done by all players even the forwards who he felt tracked back as much as possible to cut out the threat of the Sarsfields forwards.

"These lads have been working hard at that for the last number of months and I'm delighted for them, I really mean that, they are a great group of lads," Mulligan told the Leinster Express.

"They have put in serious work, they have made serious sacrifices and they got their just rewards and I'm really delighted for the McNulty family and I'm really delighted for Malachy McNulty.

"I've been involved with lads all my life in teams and he's an incredible man, you talk about the greats of football and he is the greatest in my eyes."
