The imminent appointment of Mick Lillis as Laois senior football manager has been greeted with disillusionment by former player Colm Parkinson.

Lillis' name will go before the county's clubs next week for ratification after he beat off competition from Leo Turley and Joe Higgins to fill the vacancy created by Tomás Ó Flatharta's departure.

But the news has not gone down well with Newstalk's Parkinson who revealed he was once suspended by the Portlaoise club for claiming that Clare native Lillis was 'out of his depth'.

"That's me done with Laois," he said on Off the Ball. "I'm finished with them. I'm not supporting them any more.

"The thing I'm annoyed about is Laois have two or three years to be competitive in Leinster.

"After that, when the 2003 minors are too old, (Colm) Begley and these fellas, Laois are not going to be competitive.

"There was a chance of another two or three years, if someone good enough came in, to be the second best team in Leinster and that's not going to happen now.

"I am sad about that and I am disillusioned."
