Laois manager Tomas O'Flatharta had high praise for young forward Evan O'Carroll in the wake of their defeat to Down in the NFL.

The O'Moore County lost out to the Ulster side in the last round of games, but managed to avoid relegation as other results went their way.

Laois lined out without the experienced Donie Kingston and the free taking duties were handed to youngster Evan O'Carroll who didn't let the side down as he converted seven scores.

"Evan O'Carroll, he's only a young lad, he's only 19 years of age, and he kicked all of our 45's and one even further out," O'Flatharta told the Leinster Express.

"Evan is a great lad, he's getting stronger this year and he's put in some good displays for us. It's so important to have a good free-taker on your team because it keeps you in games."
