Confusion reigns in Laois SFC

September 03, 2014

The format of the Laois senior football championship has been questioned by clubs.

The validity of the relegation play-off has been queried by the St Joseph's and Arles-Kilcruise clubs over byes being allowed in round two of the championship.

GAA rules stated that byes are only allowed in round one of a championship if permission is granted by the GAA's Central Council and it is unclear whether or not Laois had sought that permission.

St Joseph's and Arles-Kilcruise are set to meet in a relegation play off and as of yet neither have lodged an official appeal against the format.

However, they have queried the matter and Laois GAA chairman Gerry Kavanagh admitted that they will be looking into the matter.

"There is a joint query from St Joseph's and Arles-Kilcruise questioning how the championship was constructed with regard to the relegation process, and how it was put in place," Kavanagh told the Leinster Express.

"If it is proven to us that there has been a misapplication of the rule then it will have to be looked at, and we will give serious regard to the two clubs and investigate it properly."
