The highlight of tonight's O'Byrne Cup first round encounter between Laois and Meath in O'Moore Park was undoubtedly the return of Danny O'Reilly to action.

The young Graiguecullen man was left fighting for his life after suffering serious head injuries following a vicious assault during a night out in Carlow town last April. The attack came just a day after Danny had come on as a sub for Laois in their Allianz League Division 4 final victory over Carlow at Croke Park.

Against all the odds, Danny resumed playing during the summer and he received a warm reception from the crowd when he replaced Stephen Attride in the 44th minute of the pre-season opener which Meath won on a 3-11 to 0-6 scoreline.
