The late Micheál Kinsella

November 05, 2018

Micheál Kinsella RIP.

The death occurred recently of Micheál Kinsella, Fisherstown, Ballybrittas, Co Laois.

Aged just 55, Micheál had been ill in recent years but had bravely battled his condition until late last month.

He was a former player with his beloved Courtwood GAA club and won junior and intermediate football championships with “The Wood” in 1986 and 1987, famously captaining them to the intermediate title in a replay win over Portarlington.

Until Matthew Kelly lifted the intermediate cup for Courtwood just a few short weeks ago, Micheál was very proud of the fact that he was the last man to captain Courtwood to an intermediate championship. In fact, he never tired of reminding the current players about it!!

Anyone can have one nickname but Micheál was known to many as either “Farmer” or “Babs”. He was a great character and enjoyed nothing more than a day out watching either Laois or Courtwood in action followed by a few sociable ones.

He was hugely proud of his brother Eddie’s refereeing career which culminated in taking charge of the 2014 All-Ireland senior football final but failed all attempts at becoming one of Eddie’s trusted umpires!!

He’ll be hugely missed by everyone in Courtwood GAA and in the greater community. To his parents, Mick and Ann, siblings Mary, Eddie and Elaine, to Bernice and all his wider family and friends, our deepest sympathy.
