The Young Irelands squad and management celebrate after winning the clubs first ever senior championship.

YISB 3-12

Ulster 2-05

Young Irelands St Brendans made history in San Francisco as they claimed their first ever Senior Championship after 32 years in existence.

From the throw in at 1pm local time in San Francisco on Sunday August 19 th YISB dominated the game and showed they we're finally not going to be denied the clubs first ever senior championship.

Managed by Longford native John Flood and current Limerick Selector Ricky Ronayne the team had gone through the 2018 championship undefeated.

Anchored in the middle of the field by Portloise and former Laois under 21 captain Stuart Nerney, Dublin Star Emmett O'Conghaile and half forward 6ft 6" Meath man Noel Kirby, they dominated proceedings and won the first 5 kickouts in a row.

After a couple of wides YI's finally found their rhythm with scores from Oldcastle native Thomas Rahill and Dublin star Ciaran Reddin.

Further scores from Reddin and rising Leitrim player Jack Heslin saw YISB race into an 8-0 lead before 2 points from Armagh Under 21 Connor Cullen and Tyrone man Dermot Thornton seen the scores finish 08 - 02 at the break.

YISB began the 2 nd half in cruise control as Thomas Rahill dispossessed the Ulster corner back and released the ball to Cian Connolly as he slotted the ball to the back of the net, just as he did for Roscommon last year in their famous Connaught final victory over Galway.

Further scores we're added from Connolly and Cork full back Thomas Clancy before man of the match Shane Dolan burst up the field to score YISB second goal to leave the scores 2-08 - 0.02.

But then came the Ulster fight back, Donegal player Kevin McBrearty and Dublin Star Shane Carthy combined to score their first goal before Laois player Colm Murphy hit the net again to leave the score line 2-08 - 2-04.

A head injury to Emmett O'Conghaile forced the Lucan player off the field for over 10 minutes before Kilkar's Conal Gilmore combined with Heslin to see the Leitrim man finish to the back of the net and leave 7 between the teams again.

Ulster we're not done yet and Caltra's All Ireland winner Kevin Kilroy reacted brilliant to deny Ulster a 3 rd goal after an Ulster penalty rebounded off the Crossbar.

The full back line of Dunderry's Simon Carty and Newcestown's Odhran Keane then shut up shop for the final 10 minutes cutting out any further threat of an Ulster comeback.

YISB then introduced 16 year veteran goalkeeper Patrick White before captain Shane Flanagan sent a pass into Rahill to seal the historic victory for YISB on a score line of 3-12 to 2-05.

Speaking to YISB President after the game Francis McGovern said the team plan to relax for a few months after a tough couple of years and hope to become the first West coast team to play in the Paidi O'Se tournament in Kerry 2019.
