Laois footballer hospitalised following Carlow assault

A Laois footballer is recovering in hospital after being assaulted in Carlow town in the early hours of Monday.

Danny O'Reilly, who played in Laois' Allianz FL Division 4 final win over Carlow at Croke Park on Saturday, is reported to have been the victim of a serious assault in the Potato Market area of the town at around 1am.

He suffered multiple head injuries according to reports and was transferred to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny. The player is in a serious but stable condition and Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the attack.

A Garda statement confirmed: "Gardaí in Carlow attended the scene of an incident at the Potato Market, Carlow on the 2/4/2018. A male in his early 20s sustained serious head injuries during an altercation involving a number of people shortly after 1am. The injured man was removed to St. Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny where his condition is understood to be serious."
