Carnacon comes first for Staunton

Senior finalists Cora Staunton (Carnacon) and Brid O'Sullivan (Mourneabbey)

With Carnacon qualifying for Sunday's All-Ireland Club SFC decider, Cora Staunton has had to put her Aussie Rules adventure on hold.

The 35-year-old Mayo great recently put pen to paper on a contract with AFL outfit the Greater Western Sydney Giants and was originally due to join up her new team-mates earlier their month.

Club commitments took priority, however, and Mourneabbey of Cork now stand between her and a fifth All-Ireland club medal.

Staunton has a flight booked for next Tuesday and, speaking to The Irish Independent, she said: "Please God, I'll be flying off with an All-Ireland club medal in the back pocket.

"I'm meant to be out there since the 10th of November - that's when my contract started - but the club have been very good."
