Aaron Cunningham says Clare always believed they could beat Kilkenny.

Cunningham notched a match-winning 2-3 tally in the first half as the Banner County roared to a comfortable 4-22 to 2-19 victory over the All-Ireland champions in Sunday's league semi-final at Thurles.

"I think we always knew we could beat Kilkenny but I think to say we would beat them by the amount we did, I probably would be lying to you," he told The Irish Daily Mirror.

"We knew we had it in us to give them a match but probably didn't believe we could beat them with a bit to spare.

"We'd always back ourselves. There is a good mood in around the camp. There is savage competition for places. We always felt it was in us.

"A lot of people think we are kind of restricted to some sort of game but we are let do what we want and the only reason we train so hard is for days like that."
