Shane Prendergast will captain Kilkenny's senior hurlers for the 2016 season.

The news was confirmed at a press conference at Nowlan Park this afternoon, with Prendergast taking over the reins from Ballyhale Shamrocks defender Joey Holden.

The Clara man made his debut for the Cats during their National League campaign of 2014 but would wait until the following year until making his championship bow after replacing the injured Jackie Tyrrell in their Leinster SHC semi-final rout of Wexford.

The 29-year-old came on for the same player in that summer's Leinster final victory over Galway and started in his first All-Ireland final when Brian Cody's men completed a second-half comeback against the Tribesmen for the county's 36th Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Prendergast was also instrumental in Clara's third senior championship triumph the following month and his club have rewarded him in turn by nominating him as the county's new skipper.

His father Paddy was a three-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny, captaining the black and ambers to provincial glory back in 1987.
