Criticism of Kilkenny football irks Reid

TJ Reid says he hates hearing the Kilkenny footballers being slagged off.

The newly-crowned Hurler of the Year issued a stout defence of Kilkenny football when asked at yesterday's launch of the 2015 Opel GAA/GPA All Stars jersey in support of the Childhood Cancer Foundation if he thought Dublin's visit to Nowlan Park next summer would give the big ball code a boost on Noreside.

"Myself, I hate Kilkenny to be bad mouthed regarding football. There are good players in Kilkenny, good footballers, for sure. Promoting it and getting players on board, that is the problem," he is quoted in the Irish News.

"There's plenty of good footballers in Kilkenny, but they just won't put that foot forward because they could possibly be a bit embarrassed about it."

Reid was also confident that the All-Ireland hurling champions wouldn't suffer any retirements over the next few months.

"Jackie (Tyrrell), I am sure he is staying on, he hasn't announced anything yet, but it is November and if he was making up his mind, he would be making it up fairly lively.

"Mick Fennelly is definitely staying on. I think we are all looking forward to getting back in January, especially myself because I missed the whole league campaign last year because of the club (All-Ireland)," he added.
