Kilkenny hurling struck by another tragedy

January 22, 2015

Kilkenny hurlers.

The Kilkenny hurling squad has been hit by a second tragedy in as many days.

Yesterday, Johnny Ryan - father of All-Ireland winning captain Lester - was killed in a farm accident in Clara and there was further sad and tragic news today when it was confirmed that the body recovered from the River Nore in Thomastown was that of Derek Tyrrell, who was a cousin of multiple All-Ireland winning defenders Jackie Tyrrell and Tommy Walsh.

Searches had been carried out in recent days for the 33-year-old, who was swept away by strong currents in the river in the early hours of Sunday.

Derek's body was recovered around midday by divers from the navy and local civil defence. Gardaí are not treating his death as suspicious.

The Cats decided to withdraw from the Walsh Cup yesterday as a mark of respect to the late Johnny Ryan.
