Of Cats and crows and daddy longlegs

A murder of crows is causing untold damage to the Nowlan Park playing surface.

The Cats' bid to have their county grounds in top nick for their first home national hurling league game of the season against Dublin on February 22nd has been hampered by the crows, who have descended on Nowlan Park to feast upon the local delicacy of leatherjacks (the larvae grub of crane flies, AKA daddy longlegs).

While the crows are providing a welcome service on one hand by keeping the crane fly population at the venue under control, they are also in the process uprooting the pitch with their beaks, which is presenting a real challenge to the grounds staff.

"It is a real problem this year, worse than I can remember," groundsman Timmy Grogan confirmed in The Kilkenny People.

"We have had this problem before but from our experience, and speaking to other groundsmen in the area, the problem is worse this time.

"The crows did more damage to the pitch than the two games on it in recent weeks. We'll get to grips with the challenge, though."
