Top stars line out for Canon Hayes Awards

The stage is set for the 19th Annual Canon Hayes National Sports Awards, which will take place at Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort, Tipperary, on Friday next, December 12th.

The Awards will be presented by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Michael Ring, T.D.

It has the ingredients for a great night with awards to be presented in the categories of Local, County, National and Outstanding Achievement. There are also awards for Volunteer in Sport, Golden Memory Award and a special adjudicator's award.

Many different sporting disciplines will be featured amongst the nominees in the Local and County categories which include Kickboxing, Pitch & Putt, Boxing, Soccer, Hurling (Cathal Barrett) and Rugby.

The National/International nominees include stars like Kilkenny hurler Henry Shefflin, Irish Women's Rugby star Niamh Briggs, father & son Racing Partnership Aidan and Joseph O'Brien, Cork dual player Briege Corkery, and Tipperary greyhound trainer Michael O'Donovan. Recently retired athlete David Gillick is in line for a special Golden Memory Award to mark his achievements in track and field including winning the European Indoor Championship in 2005 and 2007, as well as the Irish National Outdoor Championship in 2006 & 2007.

Attendees on the night along with the nominees will include the 1956 Olympic Gold Medallist Ronnie Delany, former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins, the Chairman of the Irish Sports Council, Kieran Mulvey and the CEO of the FAI, John Delaney.
