Kilkenny chairman Ned Quinn has paid a glowing tribute to JJ Delaney who shocked the GAA world by announcing his inter-county retirement this morning.

Whereas many of the high-prolife retirements that have happened in recent weeks were expected, very few saw Delaney's coming, such was the level of his performances this year.

"JJ will be a huge loss to Kilkenny. He has been a colossus during his 14 years with the senior team," the county chairman said of the nine-time All-Ireland winner on the Kilkenny People website.

Quinn believes the hook Delaney executed on Tipperary's Seamus Callanan in the All-Ireland SHC final replay was one of the finest ever seen in hurling.

"His hook in the All-Ireland final in September will go down in the history of hurling as one of the finest pieces of skill ever seen in the game. He is one of a kind and he leaves the stage having proved his greatness beyond all doubt."
