Former Kilkenny star Conor Phelan will miss the rest of Clara's season after undergoing heart surgery.

The holders are due to face Ballyhale Shamrocks in the 2014 Kilkenny SFC final on Sunday week but Phelan will not be involved.

The 2003 All-Ireland winner was listed at wing forward in the match programme for last weekend's semi-final against Carrickshock but was summoned to Dublin for surgery on Friday.

As well as a senior All-Ireland, Phelan won All-Ireland U21 titles with the Cats in 2003 and '04 and captained the Black & Amber to the intermediate title in '08.

The triple Fitzgibbon Cup winner (with WIT) stepped off the Kilkenny senior panel in 2005 when a routine test revealed an underlying problem with a valve in his heat.
