Brian Cody says Henry Shefflin is in contention to start the All-Ireland hurling final on September 7.

The Kilkenny manager insists that there is a full 70 minutes in the 35-year-old - who is chasing a record 10th All-Ireland medal - despite the fact that he hasn't started a game for the Cats since last May's Allianz League final victory over next month's opponents Tipperary.

"For certain, he has 70 minutes in him. He has 73 or 74 minutes in him. He most definitely has. He's fit. He's in great shape. There is no doubt about that," Cody said at last night's press night.
Shefflin has only featured as a substitute in the championship to date, but Cody believes he's capable of more.

"I don't think along those lines. The team that will be picked is the team we think is the best team to start. Whoever comes on, comes on. Obviously, there is huge speculation about Henry. His career has leant itself to that.

"But from our point of view, we have a panel of players. No player is in a category to anyone else. And that's the way it has to be from a team point of view. Nobody appreciates that more than Henry himself."
