Leinster IHC: Wexford claim Leinster title

July 23, 2014
Wexford 2-11
Kilkenny 0-14

Wexford hurling has built on the recent success of their seniors with a three point Leinster IHC triumph over Kilkenny.

The result looked inevitable after a strong showing in the opening quarter had the Model County 1-6 to 0-1 ahead.

Kilkenny, however, showed fantastic spirit to overturn a seven point half-time deficit to find themselves level at 0-11 to 1-8 mid-way through the second half.

The key score of the match came with 10 minutes to play when Red Barry grabbed Wexford's second major to open up a three point lead which they managed to hold on to to emerge victorious.

Wexford raced out of the blocks and with the help of a Jamie Reck goal opened up a lead of 1-4 after just seven minutes of play.

Kilkenny, who were guilty of some poor wides, eventually got to the pitch of things but failed to reduce the early seven point deficit and went into the half-time break 1-8 to 0-4 in arrears.

After the interval, Kilkenny hit six unanswered points to pull back level and appeared to have all the momentum with 15 minutes to play.

Wexford, to their credit, responded admirably and Red Barry netted to regain a three point advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

Benny Jordan and Joey Laylor cancelled out Kilkenny's comeback attempts and Wexford held out to take the spoils.
