Delaney: Aylward proposal a non-runner

December 02, 2008
Leinster Council secretary Michael Delaney has described Ballyhale manager Maurice Aylward's proposal to stage the provincial club hurling finals in the summertime as 'unrealistic'. Speaking after his side's Leinster club final victory over Birr on Sunday, Aylward said: "It's a pity the games have to be pushed back so late in the year." But while agreeing with Aylward that hurling is a summer sport, Delaney said the proposal simply wouldn't work as inter-county managers wouldn't be prepared to release their players in the middle of the championship. "I just could not believe his comments," Delaney said. "When is he going to play the county championship, or is he talking about playing the club championship a year behind schedule? "The provincial council would have no problem playing the club finals for any part of the year, but we're talking about the real world. County championships could be completed by July if we didn't have this thing called the Liam McCarthy interfering!"
