Shamrocks boss calls for clampdown

October 24, 2008
As Ballyhale Shamrocks prepare for their SHC final showdown with James Stephens, manager Maurice Aylward is calling for a clampdown on dirty play. The 2007 All-Ireland champions bid for a third successive county crown on Sunday and an eleventh in total, but they are without the services of injured Colin Fennelly, who has a broken bone in his hand. "I am not happy with the way things are going. Players need more protection from referees. We have rules and regulations and they should be implemented more forcefully. "I would like to see the referees being stricter when doing their job. No matter who pulls a dirty stroke, puts in an illegal tackle, or gives a heavy blow or wild pull, they should be dealt with. "I am concerned the way things are being allowed to run. I am not happy with the standard of some refereeing. "I have concerns. I hate when I see wild pulls, dirty pulls or illegal tackling going unpunished. This type of wild pulling and frontal, illegal tackles has no place in our game."
