'Cha' not taking Deise for granted
September 04, 2008
Kilkenny captain James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick feels it's crucial that his side do not underestimate Waterford going into Sunday' All-Ireland SHC decider.
Since this time last year, much hype has surrounded Kilkenny over a three-in-a-row title bid but Fitzpatrick has looked to distance himself from that and instead focus on brining a coveted All-Ireland crown back to his native Ballyhale.
"It'd be unbelievable," he admits, "I'm sure we'd have a great few nights there but we'll see how it goes anyway.
"It would be a great feeling and a great thing to happen. If it happens it would be fantastic.
"I think it won't sink in for a long time but I'm just trying to keep tunnel vision and perform very well on All-Ireland final day and that's my priority."
While many did not expect the Deises to get past Liam Sheedy's Tipp side last month, 'Cha' was wary of their experience and believes that Davy Fitzgerald's men will pose as much a threat as any team would have to the Cats three-in-a-row title bid.
"Most people expected Tipperary. They were so good in Munster.
"Waterford were having problems at the start of the year too but they've turned things around and they have huge confidence after their three victories.
"Waterford are the type of team that if they get going they are very hard to stop.
"They have players with a lot of experience there and they'll grow in confidence. You underestimate Waterford at your peril."
