Tyrrell looking to complete last step
September 02, 2008
Kilkenny's Jackie Tyrrell has admitted that his side are just one step away from completing the four that the panel had set out from the start of the year.
If the Cats can overcome Davy Fitzgerald's Waterford this Sunday's All-Ireland decider at Croke Park then they will have accomplished an elusive three in-a-row in All-Ireland SHC titles.
"You can't ignore that the three in-a-row is there - it's on and if we win this one we've won three in-a-row," said Tyrrell. "As players you have to be mature about it, you can't let it affect your game or get into your head.
"We set out at the start of the year with four steps we wanted to take and we have taken three of them. There's one more to go now.
"We're not going to turn a blind eye to it because it's there as soon as we beat Limerick last year it was being talked about. We're just used to it at this stage."
The defender has played under Davy Fitzgerald while winning Fitzgibbon Cups with Limerick IT, the first of which came in 2005, and admits that the Deise have impressed him since the Clare native took charge.
"It would be a concern that Waterford have had three games where they were pushed to the pin of their collar and they've survived them," he said.
However, he admits that the only thing the team can to if they are to focus on retaining their crown for a second successive time is concentrate in training over the coming days.
"There's nothing really we can do about it. We just have to make sure in training sessions that we get an intensity where we're really driving each other on.
"There's nothing else we can do about it and hope that our fitness levels and hunger bring us through."
